The Art of Advertising Education
hi jamie, i don*t know if any of this will help but i*ll give it a shot
i got into advertising a year ago. the university i graduated in had a very small program where they sent the student for internship for about 2 months in whatever agency they could get into. it doesn*t work as much as we*d like (at least here in Manila). I*m in the creatives department, in art direction. what i*ve learned in my university from my professor was to be immersed in each visual discipline first before jumping straight into some internship in an agency.
he told me to go study under photographers. production designers. theater groups. production houses. study paintings straight from painters. the mixed exposure i got helped me a lot in art direction. so now, being in the agency, i can apply a lot of visual tricks and what not in everything i do. i think that*s one of the best programs to go through.. dive into the different visual disciplines first. hehe. or is it just me?
i hope i made some sense. hehe.

Hello, everyone!
I am a masters student in advertising at the University of Texas in Austin.
My last paper to fulfill my graduation requirements is about advertising education. Basically, I am comparing the advertising programs - both academic and portfolio programs - across several different measures.
So, I*d like to hear from students, current and former, about what your opinions of their programs are, and how it has helped you to get a job. I*d also like to hear from professionals as to what your opinions are on how the ad schools have prepped candidates for jobs. And any other opinions that are pertinent to this topic from anyone else that has one.
Please name the programs you are talking about. I think that this will also be useful to people looking at this forum and making decisions about what school to go to, and if they should even go at all.
Thanks!
